A transit station outside the Pentagon was the site of violence as an officer died after being stabbed, and a suspect involved in the incident being shot and killed by law enforcement said officials, according to Chicago Tribune on Tuesday, August 3, 2021.

The headquarters of the U.S. Military, the Pentagon, was for a short time placed on lockdown due to gunshots being fired Tuesday morning close to the entrance of the Pentagon. While this order lifted after noon, it did not include the area around the crime scene.

One Pentagon police officer later died after being stabbed, from what the officials reported. These officials were not permitted to communicate the matter but talked to The Associated Press on terms of being anonymous, according to Chicago Tribune.

Pentagon This incident happened on a Metro bus platform, a part of the Pentagon Transit Center, which is steps away from the Pentagon itself, “according to the Pentagon Protection Force Protection Agency,” according to the Chicago Tribune. This facility is feet away from the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington DC.

The relation or linkage between the shooting and the stabbing of the officer was not clear right away. However, the suspect was Austin William Lanz, 27 years old from Georgia was identified by law enforcement officials.

What Happened?

Two law enforcement officials stated Lanz ran toward the officer then stabbed him in the neck. Officers retaliated by shooting and killing Lanz. The motive of this attack is still being looked into by investigators by searching through the background of Lanz, including the possibility of mental illness or any meaning to why he would target the police officers or the Pentagon.
