Local thieves have stolen animals from the zoo in the state of Zulia, Venezuela, this Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 16, 2017, according to reports.

The perpetrators are believed to have sold the stolen animals as food, according to Luis Morales. The official from the Zulia division of the National Police also indicated that residents are struggling to find food supplies. A police officer said that the zoo has suffered several attacks during the weekend.

A wave of thefts in recent weeks had affected over 10 species including a buffalo, the head of the zoo, Leonardo Nuñez, has confirmed. He attributed this to “drug dealers” who knows what they are doing instead of simple thieves.

“They take everything here! The animals were stolen to be eaten,” Nunez said in an interview on Wednesday.

The economic and political crisis in Venezuela affects the poor people the most. The struggles to find something to eat have caused Venezuelans to look elsewhere. It significantly increases criminal actions and guarantees that they will happen again.

Even though Venezuelans are dying because of the struggle to find food, so are the animals. There are reports that indicate that the animals are not receiving proper feeding. Over 50 animals starved to death last year at a Caracas zoos, according to a union leader.
