Some Players Dismissed by the Deadline in the NFL’s Roster Cut Tracking

Tuesday’s phone call for NFL players on the roster bubble might have been very good or very awful. In order to create their inaugural regular-season rosters and release hundreds of players in the process, 32 teams reduced their rosters from 80 to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET. Here are a few.

Bostic and Charlton were released by the Saints just before Tuesday’s deadline. This year, both players had committed to play for New Orleans.

In the NFL, Bostic has moved around a lot. The Chicago Bears selected him in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He has previously played for Washington, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, and New England Patriots. In Washington, he recorded two seasons with at least 100 tackles.

Charlton was a 2017 first-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys. He spent two seasons in Dallas. He also had stints in Miami, Kansas City, and Pittsburgh. He’s tallied 92 tackles and 11.5 sacks in 55 career games.

The only quarterback who is secure in Dallas is Dak Prescott, of course.

After the Cowboys officially dismissed quarterbacks Cooper Rush, Will Grier, and Ben DiNucci before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline, Prescott is the only quarterback listed on the team’s original 53-man roster.

If they pass waivers, the Cowboys will probably add at least one of them to their practice squad. According to Ian Rapaport of NFL.com, the Cowboys will likely also sign a backup quarterback to their 53-man roster, who might be Rush.

Mack was unexpectedly released by the Texans on Tuesday after being signed as a free agency this offseason.

Rex Burkhead, Dameon Pierce, and Mack were vying to be Houston’s starting running back. Pierce looks to have prevailed in the conflict, and Burkhead will serve as the team’s back-up.

The Indianapolis Colts selected Mack in the fourth round of the 2017 draft. He recorded a career-high 1,091 running yards in 2019, but the next year, he injured his Achilles.

The Colts declined the South Florida product’s desire for a trade-in in 2021. Prior to signing with the Texans in free agency, he played in six games during his final season with Indianapolis.

In five seasons, Mack has run for 2,484 yards and 20 touchdowns.

After just one season, Leatherwood and the Raiders are breaking up. After selecting the offensive lineman with the 17th overall choice in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Raiders released him.

For the Raiders, Leatherwood initially lined up at tackle before switching to guard. At either position, he never quite lived up to expectations. According to Pro Football Focus, the lineman allowed 65 pressures and eight sacks during his debut season. The former first-round pick will now look for a new beginning somewhere else.

He was scheduled to start his sixth separate team and fourth NFL season with the Browns, who are apparently the most recent team to release Rosen.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski has chosen Jacoby Brissett to serve as the team’s interim starter until Deshaun Watson returns in Week 13 despite Watson’s 11-game suspension. Behind Watson and Brissett on Cleveland’s roster is Josh Dobbs.

Rosen, 25, was selected by the Cardinals as the 10th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He played for the organization for just one season. The following season, he became a backup with the Dolphins. Since then, he has played for the Buccaneers, 49ers, Falcons, and most recently, the Browns as a reserve or on the practice squad.

Harris made 14 starts in Philadelphia’s games last season after making 47 starts in six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. He recorded 72 tackles (two for loss) and an interception the previous season. Harris is a vested veteran, therefore as a result of his release, he is now a free agent and may join any team, including the Eagles again, without first having to pass waivers.
