The 17-time Grammy-nominated rapper D-O-double-G, Doggfather, and Mega-Mentor, Snoop Dogg, really made a statement without rapping one word during the April 2021 Knockouts on “The Voice.” The international singing competition show, with coaches Kelly Clarkson, is back after sickness, Blake Shelton, John Legend, Nick Jonas, and a mega-mentor Snoop Dogg. The first-ever rapper to serve as a mentor will assist each coach in preparing their contestants for the knockout rounds of the show.
Monday night’s performance was literally a ‘tear-jerker’ in the sense that after Clarkson’s team member, Corey Ward sang “Already Gone,” a hit song she released in 2009. During the rehearsal, Snoop Dogg stated that Ward’s rendition of the song gave him chills.
He had already held back tears during Pia Renee’s rehearsal when the singer stated she was singing as a tribute to her mother, who passed just before the Battles began. She sang Whitney Houston’s “What The World Needs Now Is Love.” Both he and Legend were moved by the performance, Snoop Dogg comparing her to Houston while telling her to make the song hers.
Emotional conversations and teary eyes did not stop there. Clarkson has been through a lot in the past year, including a rocky divorce from husband Brandon Blackstock.
Ward dared to sing his coach’s song. Doing this could either go so wrong or so good. Ward’s performance, sang with so much passion, brought Clarkson to tears.
Though it has been 12 years since the release of “Already Gone,” Clarkson, while attempting to hold back sobs, reflected on how one could write something that does not affect them until later in life. Clarkson told Ward:
How dare you come out here and kill my song?! It’s interesting when you write something you don’t feel it till years later.
Snoop Dogg commented that making the person who wrote the song that emotional really says something about the singer’s performance. Though the performance gave him chills, he told Ward that he “pushed his tear back up.”
