One teenager was killed, and two others were injured during an active shooting situation outside of East High School in Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday, according to police. Two teenagers are in critical condition, and an unspecified number of suspects in the incident have been detained, says Sgt. Paul Parizek. He did not know whether the teenagers were students at East High School.

The public schools in Des Moines, Iowa, had been given the “all clear” by police officers after the high school was put on lockdown on Monday, and people were told that all students would be dismissed on time, according to a Tweet. It was a hit in the gut that they had three teenagers at the hospital injured from the shooting and that they are hoping for the best for the teenagers, Parizek added. One teenager has passed away since this statement.

Phone calls started coming in near 2:50 p.m. CT, a short time before classes were scheduled to be dismissed for the day. Police do not think there is a continuous public threat.

While this is upsetting, they are trained for these situations, explains the Sargeant. They do need to be prepared for it for this reason. He did not have detailed information on the possible suspects, and the motive was not released immediately. Authorities threw every resource at the problem. “We know that the kids in that school are our community’s most precious cargo,” Parizek added, according to the Fox TV Digitial Team at Fox 32 Chicago.

Special agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives field office in Des Moines, Iowa, were also sent to the scene at the high school to help investigate the shooting, according to a Tweet.
