Senator John McCain left his earthly body on Saturday, August 25, 2018. Before his passing, he left an impassioned letter addressed to “My fellow Americans.”

The letter was read aloud by Rick Davis, a family spokesman, and former presidential campaign manager. As he read the letter, Davis choked up and cleared his throat several times. It was apparent that he, like so many Americans, grieve the loss of McCain.

In the closing of the letter, the senator reminded everyone that Americans do not quit, they are resilient. They do not hide from history; instead, they make history.

His dedication to the country through his Naval career, the time spent he spent suffering at the hands of the Vietnamese, his years as a Congressman where he serves in both Houses is a loss for the nation. His ability to push for his state’s causes, respect of the Constitution, and willingness to forego partisanship when necessary made him a national hero.

Oregon Governor, Kate Brown ordered the lowering of all flags at public institutions on August 26 until sundown the day of McCain’s internment. She released this statement:

Yesterday we lost an American hero. Senator McCain’s maverick sensibility meant he faced disagreement from both sides of the aisle. But, regardless of where he stood, his colleagues always knew his style was deeply rooted in an unflinching commitment to our country. Dan [her husband] and I are sending condolences to the entire McCain family during this difficult time. May his legacy continue to live on.

After laying in state at the Arizona State Capitol, there will be a private ceremony on his birthday, Wednesday, August 29. He will lie in state at U.S. Capitol Rotunda on Friday, August 31. On Sunday after a private service, he will be laid to rest in Annapolis.
