A little-known key ingredient in the manufacture of many foods is whey powder. It serves as a gel, thickener, or to modify texture.
When there is a possible salmonella contamination in the production of packaged foods the item is recalled. Once the wholesaler of the whey powder sent out notification of the possible contaminant, their customers must do the same.
Reports of recalls began the week of July 20, 2018. They are:
- Flowers Foods: various desserts and bread.
- Mondelēz Global: some Ritz Cracker products.
- Pepperidge Farms: Cracker products.
- Pinnacle Foods: Hungry Man Microwave dinners.
Flowers Foods pulled Captian John Derst’s Old Fashioned Bread sold in North and South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. The desserts taken off shelves are sold nationally under these brands: H-E-B, Food Lion, Great Value, Mrs. Freshley’s, Market Square, and Baker’s Treat.
Fifteen varieties of Ritz Crackers Sandwiches and Bits were recalled. There are specific “good from date to dates” listed. Mondelēz Global specifically stated only certain products were affected.
Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar crackers was pulled by Pepperidge Farms. As were, Flavor Blasted Sour Cream and Onion crackers, Goldfish Baked with Whole Grain Xtra Cheddar, and Goldfish Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel.
A public alert was launched by Pinnacle Foods for Hungry Man Chipolte BBQ Sauced Boneless Chicken WYNGZ. The size of the individual premade microwave frozen meals is 15.25 ounces.
Consumers should discard products on the list. For further information about the recall and subsequent updates, go to the manufacturer’s website.
Abdominal cramps, fever, and diarrhea are salmonella infection. They can hit the body 12-72 hours after ingesting contaminated foods. Other than instances of severe diarrhea or the infection spreads beyond the intestines, a healthy person should recover in 4-7 days without the need of medical treatment if they drink plenty of fluids. If unable to stay hydrated intravenous fluids might be necessary. WebMD warns:
Serious — and potentially fatal — cases are more likely in young children, frail or elderly people, and people with weak immune systems.
The CDC ensures the public there are no cases reported to date. They pointed out the food producers are recalling these products out of concern for their customers and an overabundance of caution.
