entrance exams

Entrance exams typically follow individuals throughout their educational path. Students are prompted to take tests to see the progression of their comprehension and critical thinking. Over time, students have been asked to take entrance exams to determine if they are a good fit for the school of their choice. However, entrance exams can have their pros and cons.

Test Results vs. Overall GPA

Since the 1960s, students have been highly encouraged to take the SAT or ACTs to prove their worth and the dedication they will put forth to be accepted into their choice of school. Unfortunately, the two tests involve endless hours of preparation, time, and money to be accepted into an Institution that may not guarantee the student a spot within the University.

Test scores and GPAs could go hand and hand, but in this case, one may rule over the other. Students that lack acceptable GPAs for their dream school could use their test to reassure the Institution they could be a good fit, but some may say that is a bit backward. Why accept test scores when GPAs are the determining factor for Institutions and their graduation rates?

Pros for Testing

SAT or ACTs can have some advantages. Students who are good test takers and have received good test results have a higher chance of being accepted into the University of their choice. This can also help students receive scholarships to go towards their academic finances. These two tests can also show students and teachers what areas the students lack within their test.

Cons for Testing

Although tests determine preparation, some students may not be good test-takers, which can disadvantage those who actually put forth the effort. SAT or ACTs are timed tests that could put stress on students who are not good test-takers. This can result in students receiving a poor grade which can limit them in choice of Universities.

What to Expect in Future

Students think these entrance exams are pointless — as they do not measure how far students are willing to go to show their academic potential. Moreover, the cost of these tests is expensive and increases the actual cost of starting college. So, perhaps, SAT and ACTs may be eliminated soon for high school students.
