President Donald Trump was reportedly insistent on setting up a summit between himself and Russian President Vladimir Putin, among the continuing investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and despite internal protests from White House aides about the political views of such a potential summit.

President Trump and President Putin, will hold a one-to-one summit meeting in the next few weeks, officials of both countries said on Wednesday, June 27, 2018. This is an encounter that has raised anxieties among major European allies of the United States.

“Putin comes extremely well prepared for these meetings,” said Michael McFaul, a Trump critic who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Russia during President Barack Obama’s second term. “He knows what he is seeking to achieve. He does psychological work ahead of time to think about the strengths and weaknesses of the people he’s talking to.”

“What Putin brings is an ability to articulate his demands, a better knowledge of what he wants out of these discussions and a track record of knowing how to manipulate people to get what he wants,” said William Pomeranz, a Russia expert at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

Trump’s national security adviser, John R. Bolton, who had traveled to Moscow to lay the groundwork for the summit, confirmed at a news conference that the meeting will take place. A short while earlier, Russian official Yuri Ushakov said that the meeting would be held in a “third country” in a few weeks.
