ClossBarron County Sheriff Department rushed to the Closs family home just after midnight on Oct. 15, 2018, in response to a disturbing 911 call that contained screams in the background.

Deputies passed a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction as they proceeded by with sirens blaring. One officer believed the car in question to be an older style, maroon in color Ford Taurus that yielded to the caravan of deputies they sped by in route to the home, according to CNN on Jan. 15, 2019.

They had no way of knowing that the driver of that vehicle was Jake Patterson. And in the trunk bound by her wrist and ankles with tape covering her mouth was 13-year-old Jayme Closs.

The near-encounter detailed in the criminal complaint against Patterson that released on Monday. Police came stunningly close to finding and confronting the suspect right in the moments of Jayme’s kidnapping.

Instead, they arrived to find Denise Closs, 46, and James Closs, 56, dead on the scene, with no trace of Jame. Months later a woman walking her dog found Jayme when she escaped from captivity nearby.

Arrested that day, 21-year-old Patterson confessed to shooting and killing James and Denise Closs as well as abducting Jamye according to the complaint. Patterson is being held on $5 million bail and is due back in court for his arraignment on Feb. 6.

He is represented by Public Defenders Richard Jones and Charles Glynn who spoke with reporters but did not give details concerning the case.
