Last week, on March 23, 2018, “Pacific Rim Uprising” made a big debut in theaters after the five year wait its predecessor left and unseated the superhero blockbuster from Disney “Black Panther” after five straight weeks at the top of box office.

After being at the top of box offices for five consecutive weeks, “Black Panther” was finally dethroned on its sixth weekend by “Pacific Rim Uprising.” The newly released movie earned about $28 million its first weekend, while “Black Panther” only made $16.7 million during its release weekend.

The movie took heavy hits from critics and, like its predecessor, it was more popular in foreign territories. However, the audience still gave it an average rating and it is projected to make $122.5 million this coming weekend with $65 million coming from china alone.

Now sliding to second place with $16 million in its sixth week, “Black Panther” remains the highest-grossing superhero movie ever made in the U.S. The movie stands at $631 million domestic ticket sales with overseas sales still increasing. Soon, the movie will be reaching $1.24 billion, which will make it the 14th film to cross the $1.2 billion mark world wide.

Directed by Steven S. DeKnight and produced by the original director, Guillermo Del Toro, “Pacific Rim Uprising” picks up 10 years after its predecessor showing audiences the world after the first invasion and how humans are recovering with John Boyega playing a lead role as Jake Pentecost, the son of Stacker Pentecost, who was introduced in the first movie.
