After warning the U.S. of their attempt of resolving denuclearization concerns, Kim Jon -Un’s regime has fired two missiles into the Sea of Japan, getting President Joe Biden’s attention on March 26, 2021. He feels that this violates a United Nations resolution and that the U.S. will respond accordingly if they choose to escalate.
Kim Jong-Un’s sister was quoted in the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper on March 16 as saying: “A word of advice to the new administration of the United States that is struggling to spread the smell of gunpowder on our land from across the ocean. If it wants to sleep in peace for [the] coming four years, it had better refrain from causing a stink at its first step.”
After the Summit of 2018 in Singapore between North Korea and the U.S., Trump administration officials said the agreement pledged complete, verifiable, and irreversible dismantlement of its nuclear program. North Korea denies this allegation.
Biden administration’s insistence on adopting the same emphasis on the denuclearization that Trump had is not helping when they insist on something North Korea has rejected flat out.
Biden Administration Receives Surprise Response
Jen Psaki previously told reporters that the administration had reached out to Kim Jong Un but had not received a response, despite multiple attempts by the U.S. to engage.” With the firing of the recent missiles and two test fires, North Korea is now responding — but not with talk.
The United States wants to confirm Korea’s willingness for full denuclearization first. Still, it is concerned about the outcome of a “bad deal,” which could fail to meet the nuclear non-proliferation treaty’s (NPT) international standards allowing it to maintain a covert program.
North Korea feels that denuclearization is contingent on the U.S. lifting what it calls the “hostile policy” of diplomatic, military, and economic pressure.
Many experts feel that both parties need to talk. Markus Garlauskas sees this as a sign of North Korea’s continuation of advancing its missile programs, which could lead to larger launches involving multiple nuclear weapons.
Kim Yo-jong had never elaborated on exactly what would happen if the U.S. did not heed their warning. Now, with the firing of the missiles, she absolutely has Biden’s attention.
