Nikki Haley submitted her resignation as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations to the president on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018. She will be stepping down at year’s end.

President Donald Trump personally accepted the notification. Earlier in the day, he referred to her as his friend in a Tweet.

When Haley discussed the possibility of accepting the job, she told then-Chief of  Staff Reince Priebus she might be interested if certain conditions were met. According to CNN, her first request was to be “a member of the Cabinet and the National Security Council.” She wanted to have a hand in the “decision-making process.”

Moreover, Haley asserted her need to have the freedom to be herself and the right to speak her own mind. Haley was adamant about not being one of Trump’s talking heads or a wallflower. The president agreed to these terms.

During her tenure, she has spoken her mind. Haley’s position on human rights surpassed her contemporary’s and she repeatedly denounced the racism in the United States.

While it is likely, this resignation comes after the strain of working for a man who embarrassed the U.S. during UN meetings several times, has yet to be confirmed.

Further updates will be provided as they come available.
