Musical Jam at the International Space Station

There is an out-of-this world musical jam orbiting 250 miles above the Earth in the ISS. NASA astronauts and Russian cosmonauts took a break to have an old-fashioned jam session in space.

The Expedition 55 crew gathered musical instruments from around the lab to entertain with a zero-gravity jam session, on April 27, 2018. The new group has been named AstroHawaii.”

Astronauts Scott Tingle, Drew Feustel, and Ricky Arnold, along with Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Oleg Artemyev joined the musical stylings of Hawaiian drums, Texas, and Peruvian pipes for a one-of-a-kind concert for the universe.

Tingle and Feustel were on guitars and Arnold accompanied them on the Hawaiian drum. Peruvian pipes were added by Shkaplerov and Artemyev. The cosmonauts learned to play after 20 minutes of practice.

The Twitterverse has requested an out-of-this world album. At the very least, fans will accept a video of the space concert.

Feustal tweeted, “We think this may be the first ‘guitar jam’ on the ISS with amplifiers and effects! It was quite the rock ‘n’ roll show.”

Presumably, Norishige Kanai, the Japanese astronaut is behind the camera.

The two small-bodied guitars are from Larrivee, a Canadian maker.

It is not surprising this particular group would put a band together on the ISS. Tingle has a rock ‘n’ roll past and playing the guitar is one of Feustel’s hobbies.

There has not been any word yet on what songs the ISS jam included. Cnet is hoping the playlist included “Space Oddity,” “Rocket Man” and “Space Truckin’.”
