In Utah, the Salt Lake City Police Department report that the suspect in the fatal shooting and attempted carjacking was arrested on Oct. 31, 2017.
Twenty-four-year-old Austin Jeffrey Boutain was apprehended at the Salt Lake City Public Library on East 400 South. He surrendered to the library staff, according to Detective Greg Wilking.
The department posted a tweet indicating he was taken into custody at 12:45 p.m. MT. They used the hashtag, #homicide when referring to the suspect.
The suspect was wanted in connection with the death of Chen Wei Guo, a University of Utah student. Boutin was also a person of interest in the murder of a 63-year-old man in Golden, Colorado.
Last night, after the discovery of a homicide, a manhunt began at approximately 9:00 p.m. Officials told the students and staff at the university to shelter in place. The campus remained locked down for hours afterward and classes were canceled for today.
In addition to the FBI, at least eight other agencies searched Butte Canyon near the campus. They had a helicopter assisting the search.
The victim’s identity was released by Christopher Nelson a spokesperson for the university. President David W. Pershing released a statement confirming that Chen was an international student from China. He was studying pre-computer science. Chen also served as a “peer advisor in the International Student and Scholar Services Office.
No information has been released about the charges to be filed or when Boudin will be arraigned.
