Mocking Ensues After Trump Claims He Rejected Time Magazine’s Offer

Time Magazine

After a false proclamation from President Trump on Friday, November 24, 2017, of how he received a call from Time Magazine. He claimed they notified him that he was chosen to be Man (Person) of the Year, and received a call saying so. He included in the tweet on how he turned down Time Magazine offer because they said he would “probably” be chosen, and to him “- probably is no good and took a pass.”

Contrary to what Trump described, Time Magazine quickly responded to his statement: “The president is incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year. TIME does not comment on our choice until publication, which is December 6.”

The person who earns this title contributed significantly to an event or issue in the past year. The recipient is chosen by Time Magazine’s editorial board. The publication also takes readers’ votes by means of an online poll. However, being chosen is not a statement of approval or a popularity contest.

The president’s false statement incited another jab at Trump by Pete Souza. He was former President Barack Obama’s official White House photographer.

Souza has undermined Trump’s image by posting photographs which show the contrast between him and Obama. The point is to demonstrate the differences between how the former president got along with those the current president does not.

For example, Souza used an image of Pope Francis and Obama shaking hands while exhibiting mutual admiration. On the other hand, Trump’s views on poverty and climate change differ from the Pope’s and their photos show dissatisfaction with one another.

The back and forth dialogue over Trump being selected as the person of the year occurred after Souza shared 15 images of Obama on the cover of Time Magazine. The accompanying caption read, “Someone has a lot of catching up to do.”

The ongoing tweets betwixt the two have inspired others to post their comments about the scene Trump’s outlandish statement caused. These mockingly mirror Trump’s monologue.

Dan Pfeiffer wrote about his disbelief that Trump felt it necessary to make such a brazen statement. He further believes that the president made the claim to increase his approval rating.

His exact words were: “This tweet is so sad. Imagine being super rich, President of the United States, and still being so needy for approval.”
