Shortly after Kim Foxx was sworn in office on Monday, Dec. 7, 2020, she immediately went after Chicago’s Fraternal Order of Police (FOP). Foxx cited in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death and the consent decree in Chicago’s city, police should have accountability for their actions. Her top priority is working with the Illinois Attorney General on police licensing.
John Cantanzara Jr., the leader of FOP, stated that Foxx should focus on the increased murder rate in Chicago as opposed to police licensing. Cantanzara Jr. felt this was retaliation for the union supporting Foxx’s rival, Pat O’Brian, in the November elections. Contanzara Jr. states that licensing is not acceptable in any way, shape, or form.
The FOP states that police officers have been more accountable but object to police licensing. State Senator Elgie Sims dismisses these allegations of retaliation of Foxx by the FOP. Foxx wants to build trust within Chicago communities by holding officers liable for illicit actions — ergo, no officer is above the law.
Albeit the legislation is still in its infancy stage and being drafted, it does have the support of house speaker Mike Madigan.
He is a currently embattled political figure, is probably one of the only representatives in the Midwest who represents the old party boss system. Throughout this ordeal, Foxx has not requested that Madigan take a back seat in his bid for re-election. Still, she adamantly believes elected officials should have an innate ability to support their constituents.
