Hurricane Dorian

Earlier forecasted as an “extremely dangerous major hurricane,” Hurricane Dorian is currently crossing the Atlantic Ocean with wind speeds up to 110 mph.

By Thursday night, Aug. 29, 2019, the hurricane strengthened to a Category 2 and has increased since then. As Dorian makes its way toward the U.S. mainland, the National Hurricane Center estimates that it will become a Category 4 by the time it makes landfall- intensifying on the weekend.

David Parkison, CBS News weather producer, announces Hurricane Dorian has a high chance of reaching a wind speed of 140 mph as it approaches Florida by Monday evening.

The National Weather Service encourages Florida residents to “prepare NOW” as residents face a “life-threatening storm surge.”

What Supplies Are Necessary to Prepare for a Hurricane?

When preparing for the hurricane, citizens are urged to take the proper precautions when concerning pets and children, in terms of supplies the RedCross recommends having the following:

  • At least a three-day supply of water, preferably one gallon per person, per day;
  • At least a three-day supply of non-perishable, easily prepared food;
  • Battery-powered or hand-cranked radio;
  • First aid kit;
  • Sanitation and personal hygiene items;
  • Safety blanket;
  • Rain gear;
  • Extra batteries;
  • Copies of important personal documents (lease papers, birth certificates, insurance policies, etc.)

What is Being Done About the Hurricane so Far?

In the face of this emergency, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared this a state of emergency and reached out to President Donald Trump for a pre-landfall disaster declaration, who canceled a weekend visit to Poland in response to the storm.

In advance, Florida Power and Light initiated its emergency response team on Thursday to help restore possible power outages.

Due to the dangerous forecast, places such as the Kennedy Space Center and the University of Miami plan to close until the hurricane passes. Additionally, the Rolling Stones rescheduling their Florida performance and the Air Force evacuating aircraft at MacDill Air Force Base as a precaution of the dangerous weather.

The extent of the damages caused by Hurricane Dorian has been minimal so far, sweeping past British and the U.S. Virgin Islands as well as storming Puerto Rico with rain.

If Dorian continues on its path, it will be the first Category 4  hurricane on Florida’s east coast since 1992.
