“Halloween” made a killing at the box office in the first week of its opening as of October 19, 2018, and continues its hold the number one position in the box office on October 28.
The 11th movie in the Michael Myers series, “Halloween” beat popular expectations and earned approximately $80 million during the opening weekend. In such a short time “Halloween” has not only received the box office crown but may also surpass Marvel’s ‘Venom’ for best October opening.
Universal’s, Jamie Lee Curtis-led semi-reboot of the series has not only caused the movie to score excellent reviews across the board but it also marks another win for Hollywood. With the recent popularity with horror genres, this 2018 version of “Halloween” added to the list of big Hollywood office totals.
Compared to the 1978 original release of “Halloween” by John Carpenter and the films earning of $47 million during its entire run, the 2018 sequel has bypassed outstanding expectations for far. The earnings, even higher than the 2007 remake which had the highest debut with at least $60 million worldwide.
Picking up 40 years after the original film in 1978, the movie is a direct sequel that takes place in a world where none of the events in the previous series franchise happened. Fans of the series were both skeptical and condescending when hearing about the rewriting of the entire franchise. However, most fans were pleasantly surprised with how the movie creates an entirely different canon for the series.
In this new continuation, Curtis’ Laurie Strode has been haunted by the events that took place on Halloween night 40 years past. Now a grandmother, Strode has been training and preparing herself for Michael’s return. Armed with a gun and her wits she is ready for another jaw-dropping night or a fight to the death.
The second week after its box office opening and the slasher film still holds its title of number one. The film earned over $100 million by October 26. For the second week in a row “Halloween” earned $32 million, dropping 57 percent in its earning, for a robust $126.7 million during its ten-day run.
