el pasoOn Feb. 10, 2019, El Paso Mayor Dee Margo (R) announced her intent to rebut President Trump if he repeats inaccurate statistics about the city’s crime rate during his rally scheduled on February 11..

Margo has been vocal about the claims the president made during his SOTU address on Feb. 5. While one portion of Trump’s statement is correct, the basis of the claim is false. He boldly professed the reason El Paso is the safest city in America is because of the border wall between the city and Mexico.

The mayor, sheriff, and other city officials were offended by Trump’s claim. Yes, it is considered the safest city in the U.S., but it was never one of the country’s worst. Moreover, El Paso was safe before the wall was erected.

Sheriff Richard Wiles told reporters it was sad to listen to the president spread falsehoods about El Paso in order to support his claims the proposed 2,000-mile border wall.

Margo used Twitter to echo Wiles’ statement. He wrote the wall at the international border did impact illegal immigration. It also helped to curb crime. However, the wall is only a deterrent and “law enforcement in our community continues to keep us safe.”

He is adamant about standing up for El Paso’s truths and will not allow President Trump to get away with repeating the same lies he used during the State of the Union speech at his upcoming rally. Margo will remain unafraid to rebut the president should he use the same fake statistics during the upcoming presidential rally.

The rally in El Paso is scheduled three days after America could be thrown into another shutdown. Trump states the negotiations were pointless even though he reopened the government to allow both parties to come up with funding for his pet project. Both Democrat and Republican congressional leaders report they are at an impasse.
