When Donald Trump was running for president, he stated that he was under audit but would deliver his tax returns to the public as soon as possible, breaking a decades-long tradition of White House contenders willingly releasing their tax returns. However, on Aug. 3, 2021, the Biden administration’s Department of Justice ordered the former president to release his returns.

After Trump’s claim about the audit, experts say that does not prevent someone from making their tax returns public, and he has gone four years without doing so. Meaning that both the excuse and the promise were lies, like so many other things out of Trump’s mouth.

So why was he so adamant about not disclosing his documents?  People felt it was because he had something to hide, such as possible tax evasion, fraud, or ties to Russian oligarchs. And he would prefer to keep burying anything those tax returns might disclose six months after he leaves office.

TrumpAfter the Justice Department ordered the Treasury to hand over six years of Trump’s tax returns to congressional investigators, who had been requesting them for two years, the former president’s lawyers stated that they would go to whatever length to keep his financial information safe.

“There is no proof of any wrongdoing here,” his lawyer, Ronald Fischetti, said in a statement. He stated that he protests against the release of the returns, which will not only be on behalf of his client but also on all future holders of the workplace of the President of the United States.

It is worth noting that he is one of the few presidents in the last 50 years who has refused to produce his tax returns, and unless another person like Trump runs for office, subsequent candidates will surely follow the lead of those with nothing to conceal.

“We’re going to fight this tooth and nail,” Fischetti added, referring to the DOJ’s ruling as “totally ludicrous.”
