At least 17 dead and 20 receiving treatment for injuries sustained during a tragic shooting. Shortly after 3:00 p.m. ET officials responded to reports of shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel told reporters the shooter is in custody. Isreal further stated the suspect, Nicolas Cruz, is a student who was suspended from the high school.

Photos reflect the terror during the homicidal rage that ended with the suspect’s apprehension. Students are shown walking in single file with the lead youngster’s hands held high and the others following with their hands on the shoulders of the person ahead of them.

Kayden Hanafi, a freshman, told the local CNN affiliate that he and others went on lockdown after two shots were heard. He said they thought the sounds were firecrackers going off. Hanafi ended his interview with, “It’s really a blessing to still be alive.”

One teacher said they hid 19 students in a closet once the shooting began. Another student, Nicole Baltzer, explained that the fire alarm sounded off about 10 minutes before the end of the day. Accordingly, they evacuated the building. However, once they heard the shooting, they all scrambled back into the building.

One student fled the campus grounds and hid at a local retail store.
