Chicago native, Heather Mack is on her way back to the states after her release from an Indonesian prison. She had served 7 years of a 10-year-sentence following her conviction for participating in the murder of her mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack.
The Indonesian government quickly escorted Mack to board a flight back to the United States as they were committed to deporting the convicted felon.
Chief of the Bali regional office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Jamaruli Manihuruk, asked the central government to bar Mack from entering the country for life.
In the case of severe violation of Indonesian law, “immigration officers may decide to ban [a] foreigner to re-enter Indonesia for a specific period of time. The initial period of the ban can be up to 6 months, but is usually extended. Foreigners are not able to enter Indonesia until the directorate general of immigration removes the ban,” according to the PNB immigration law firm.
Manihuruk’s request to bar Mack from entering the country for life appears to be outside of the norm.
Perhaps the crime of matricide is considered so severe that it is why the Indonesian government is currently seeking to ban Mack from their country for life.
For years, Mack and her mother had a troubled relationship, according to police reports. This unbalanced relationship ended in the murder as Mack and her boyfriend committed the homicide together. Tommy Schaefer, Mack’s companion hit von Wiese-Mack several with a fruit bowl before stuffing her body into a suitcase.
