Chris Singleton, son of a victim in the Charleston church shooting two years ago, was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. He was picked in the 19th round of the MLB draft, on June 14, 2017.

In the 2017 season, he played for Charleston Southern University. As a center fielder, the junior started in 51 games and stole 18 bases.

Singleton’s mother was Reverend Sharonda Coleman-Singleton at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, the target for shooter Dylan Roof, on June 17, 2015.

It has been two years since the Charleston Church shooting. According to CNN, Singleton explained his mom was “a God-fearing woman who loved everyone with all her heart.”

After being drafted by the World Series champions, Singleton decided to create a social media hashtag in honor of his mom: #CantLetMomsDown

The senior vice president for the Chicago Cubs stated that “Singleton’s talent is what got him drafted. We had him evaluated as a top-10-round-caliber talent.”

The Cubs hold Singleton to high expectations and believe he is a great baseball player. He can choose to join the roster of the Chicago Cubs, sign with a minor league team, or return to college and finish his senior year. As Singleton continues his dream with a heavy heart, will he be able to focus and strive for greatness at the next level?
