On Oct. 9, 2017, the Chicago Bears faced the Minnesota Vikings. The game ended with the Vikings winning 20-17. However, Mitchell Trubisky, the rookie quarterback, who was the second pick of the 2017 draft, showed signs of greatness. The University of North Carolina product threw 12 completions for 25 passes with one touchdown and 128 yards.

Head coach John Fox said,

He’s got what it takes, there’s no doubt in my mind. For a first game, I go back to watching guys like Joe Montana in his first game. I’ve seen a few of them I’m not making comparisons at this point. But he will do nothing but get better.

Trubisky carried the Bears back from a 17-9 deficit in the fourth quarter of the game. He tied the game up, 17-17, with a 20 yard pass to Zach Miller. Then, he pulled a trick play, which consisted of a fake toss for a two point conversion. The Chicago Bears are now at a record of 1-4, with the loss to Minnesota despite the late comeback attempt.

The Bears defense did well in the first half of the game. They managed to score the first 2 points with a sack on Sam Bradford from safety Leonard Floyd. Chicago had the lead late in the first quarter. The Vikings sat Bradford down in the second quarter and brought in Case Keenum.

He brought his team to a lead over the Chicago Bears, with a touchdown pass to Kyle Rudolph. Chicago immediately scored again on a fake punt pass. Minnesota answered back with a 58 yard touchdown by running back, Jerick McKinnon.

As great as Trubisky seems, the Chicago Bears still will have work to do. However, it will be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out, with Trubisky as starting quarterback.

This team has been plagued with injuries since the start of the season. Inside linebacker, John Timu, left the game with a knee injury. Wide receivers are constantly getting injured, which leaves the Bears exposed, without strong defensive weapons. Situations like this will only make it harder for the Chicago Bears to progress throughout the rest of the year. Willie Young, who is a star linebacker for the team, had to sit out with a triceps injury, on Sept. 28, 2017, in a game against the Green Bay Packers.

The Bears managed to rack up six penalties in the first quarter, including a penalty, Markus Wheaton that disqualified Jordan Howard’s 42-yard touchdown.

Miller’s thoughts on Trubisky are as follows:

He extended plays for us, made plays downfield, made plays with his legs, put us in position to win that game. What we need to do is be better, collectively, around him. Too many pre-snap penalties, too many plays breaking down technique. I think he did everything he could for us to win that game. I’m excited for his future.

Although this season, so far, has not been looking well the for Chicago Bears, their faith and morale in their team has had a turn around, due to Trubisky’s surprise, rookie debut performance.
