Babe Ruth

Babe Ruth, born George Herman Ruth, Jr. was known as an all-time baseball great, who played from 1914 to 1935 with various teams, has had a National Day named for him. April 27, 2021, was National Babe Ruth Day. While some reflect on the fact that he set career records for home runs, slugging percentages, runs batted in, and being the first player to hit 60 home runs in one season, some were reminded of an affair with Nell Wilson. On April 8, 2021, written by the baseball icon to Wilson sold at an auction for $201,851.

In 1914, Babe Ruth married Helen Woodford, a waitress he met in a coffee shop at the beginning of his career with the Red Sox. He was 19 years old. He earned the reputation of a womanizer after a number of years.

His wife died in a house fire in 1929. Babe Ruth married Clarie Merrit three months later. He was known for partying and womanizing, but since both he and his wife were devout Catholics, divorce was a non-factor.

Babe RuthNot much is known about Wilson, other than nearly a hundred years ago, a letter was found in her scrapbook written by Babe Ruth. The letter, which was written some time around 1922, told Wilson that his wife had argued with him and he would see her on Monday.

He explained that the ball club was all over him also, and that the only way he could see her all night was if she came to the hotel where he was staying.

The letter, which first sold in 2004 for $86,000, contained Babe Ruth’s authentic signature as verified by PSA, the the world’s leading third-party authentication service for autographs and memorabilia.

Like Wilson, not much is known about the name of the person who paid over $200,000 for the letter.
