Stephen Broderick, 41, was arrested after an overnight search for the shooting death of three people, April 19, 2021, in Austin, Texas, around 7 a.m. CST. According to Police Chief Ryan Phipps, a couple of people reported a person matching Broderick’s description walking down Old Kimbro Road.

Broderick, an ex-sheriff, submitted peacefully to the arresting officers, even though a gun was found on him.  He was taken to the Travis County Jail. Last year, he was ordered to give up his gun and wear an ankle monitoring device after being arrested and charged with sexual assault of a child.

AustinBroderick and his ex-wife, Alyssa Broderick, were meeting for their son’s arranged visit with his dad Sunday afternoon. The police found two vehicles that looked to have collided near an apartment complex: Amanda Broderick, 34; his stepdaughter, Alyssa Marie Broderick, 17; and Willie Simmons III, 18, the stepdaughter’s boyfriend. The couple’s son was not hurt.

Authorities predicted the situation to be domestic and did not feel the shooter was a threat to others in Austin. Still, social media alerts of the shooting were sent out, as residents were asked to stay in their homes while police saturated the area and shut down the highway in both directions.

During a Sunday news briefing, Chacon said:

Obviously, this is a tragedy. We have people who have lost their lives out here.

Elgin High School officials spoke favorably of Alyssa Broderick and Willie Simmons, a senior who had been on the school’s basketball and football team. Simmons was recruited to play at the University of North Texas while Alyssa had attended an early college program, according to their coach, Omasha Brantley.

Broderick, who was already released on bond for previous charges, was denied bail per Texas law. The District Attorney’s office states that it proceed with capital murder charges to the Travis County grand jury.
