At approximately 11:29 AM Friday, Nov. 30, 2018, a 7.0 earthquake shook Anchorage, Alaska. According to WSLS channel 10 news, the quake rocked buildings, prompting people to run out of offices and seek shelter under office desks.
The U.S Geological Survey first reported the trembler as having a magnitude of 5.7 but later upgraded it to 7.0.
The 10 News website posted a story about Anchorage lawyer Justin Capp who was getting ready for work when he felt the shaking begin. While holding onto his hallway door frame, the door smashed into his hand. Capp stated that it was the worst earthquake experience he has had in the eight years he has lived in Anchorage.
There is a story coming out of the Washington Post warning Anchorage residents to move to higher ground as the National Weather Service has issued a tsunami warning for Cook Inlet and South Kenai Peninsula.
The Post also reported that “Anchorage Police Department said there was major infrastructure damage across the city, which is home to more than 294,000 people.”
Cassie Schirm shared an image on Twitter of KTVA news station in Anchorage which shows the kind of destruction the 7.0 earthquake produced.
A Tsunami warning was issued for the Cook Inlet and Southern Kenai Penninsula in Alaska. There is with significant inundation is expected or occurring. Warnings indicate that widespread dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents is possible and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.
Since Tsumani’s travel at hundreds of miles per hour, it is unsafe to wait and see. Take the necessary precautions to remain safe.
