All Things Mollison: From a Student’s Perspective

In-person learning and remote learning are used to determine if someone should repeat a grade. In case anyone did not read the Promotion Policy, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is mixing 2021 grades with 2022 grades. But, there is a twist. If someone’s grades are bad in 2022, CPS decided to give people another chance. CPS will mix grades from both years if someone has a failing grade.

Why did people think it was bad?

People thought it was bad because they were under the impression that CPS was mixing the grades in general. This led everyone to think they will go to summer school, but that is not true. If they are above a C average in 2022, they do not have to worry because it doesn’t affect their grade.

Mollison is not a bad school but, arguably, the rules are not very good. However, they do have a good cell phone policy. The cell phone policy is to prevent students from creating drama or calling people to harm other students. There are also some downsides. What if they need to contact their parent when there is not a guardian around? Then they have to follow school policy and let a teacher know so they can go to the office to make a call home.

Do you need a uniform?

Another thing some students might dislike about Mollison is the uniform policy. The majority of people express themselves through clothing and style. I feel that uniforms are not needed; clothes do not alter academics.

On the other side of wearing uniforms, when students all wear the same clothing every day at school, it levels out the playing field. Any expectations on what to wear are removed and children develop a greater sense of equality. It can also reduce the potential for bullying. If a student feels like they do not belong, or they don’t have the latest and best clothing, it can be damaging to their confidence. A lack of confidence can be one of the most significant barriers to academic growth. Additionally, wearing uniforms provides a more safe environment because our students are more easily identifiable.

Last But Not Least

Mollison is a good school with good policies. However, it does have its cons. Mollison is ranked as the top #1512 elementary school in Illinois and that’s not so good.

All schools have different policies and not everyone will like them. I have been at Mollison for seven years so I know there is always a reason for every policy they have put in place.
