A passenger at Orlando International Airport tried to board a plane carrying a Ruger handgun and 10 rounds of ammunition, according to the Transportation Security Administration.
The passenger, who was not identified, has a valid Florida concealed-weapons permit. However, he will be charged with carrying a concealed weapon in an area prohibited by law, according to the Orlando Police Department.
TSA officers reported that they had intercepted 91 weapons at the Orlando International Airport in 2017. The police said this was a dangerous and disturbing pattern. Most of the firearms that have been confiscated were loaded. The way passengers swing their bags onto the X-ray belts it would be easy for one to accidentally discharge with catastrophic results.
People who bring guns to security checkpoints can face a $13,000 civil penalty even if they are not arrested.
Nearly 500 weapons have been intercepted from five of Florida’s airports: Orlando International, Tamp International, Miami International, Lauderdale-Hollywood International, and Jacksonville International.
In 2016, 3,391 guns were confiscated from the carry-on bags of 238 airports. This was an increase of 28 percent, compared to 2015. One hundred, sixty-five or those weapons were from Tampa and Orlando International airports. The numbers have not been calculated for 2017.
