Residents of Mexico had to be evacuated due to 2.3-foot waves crashing into the southern coastline. Reports of the buildings collapsing as people rushed to safety. The epicenter of the earthquake was 6.8 miles from Santa María Zapotitalán in Oaxaca state, which is near El Coyul.
The effects of the earthquake could be felt as far away as Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Citizens living in Mexico City could feel the tremors. According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, waves were possible within 621 miles of the epicenter. The US Geological Survey (USGS0 ShakeMap said that the damage in Oaxaca was minimal to moderate.
A 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit 12 kilometers south-southwest of Santa María Zapotitlán, Mexico, on June 23, 2020. This powerful earthquake epicenter was 26.3 kilometers. It strongly shocked buildings and homes in Mexico City.
Once the earthquake alarms alerted the citizens, they began flooding the streets. At this time there have been no reports of injury or damages. There has been a tsunami threat issued for Mexico.
