A 7.1-magnitude earthquake rocked Peru, on Jan. 14, 2018, at 6:55 a.m. ET, and killed at least two people, according to a governor in the region.

A tsunami warning was issued for the coast of Peru. However, all warnings were canceled an hour after the earthquake because tsunami waves were not observed.

One victim was a 55-year old man. He was crushed by falling rock in Yauca. Yamila Osorio, the governor of the Arequipa region, tweeted that 20 minor injuries were reported in Chala. There was also structural damage and landslides in the area.

The other victim was killed in the same region in southern Peru, according to the President of the Geophysics Institute Hernando Tavera. He did not give any further details.

According to the National Emergency Operations Center, at least 23 people were injured in the Arequipa area. There is no information on the injured or what condition they are in at this time.

The depth of the temblor was 8 miles. Shallow quakes shake the crust of the earth harder because the vibrations can only move outward. The epicenter was 26 miles south/southwest of Acari, Peru, according to the United States Geological Surgey.
