According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the plane took off from DeKalb-Peachtree Airport in Chamblee, Georgia. The airport is located approximately 22 miles north of the main Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The airport’s website claims it is the second busiest in Georgia after Hartsfield-Jackson. Associated Press reports that it averages an estimated 209,000 annual takeoffs and landings over the past three decades.

Capt. Jaeson Daniels with DeKalb County Fire Rescue confirmed the deaths of all four people on board the six-seater Cessna 210. The time of the flight was shortly after 1 p.m. EDT on Friday. According to Daniels, the plane caught fire and was still burning when authorities arrived on the scene. At least five fire and rescue vehicles along with two fire engines showed up at the site. At least 15 firefighters were tasked with extinguishing the flames.

FAA and NTSB Investigation

Daniels also stated that the incident is under investigation by both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The NTSB is reportedly in charge of the investigation. The NTSB announced that an NTSB investigator was expected to arrive on the scene the following Saturday morning. However, as of Saturday, Oct 9, 2021, none of the crash victims have been identified by authorities. Moreover, there is no update regarding the cause of the crash.
